If you’re thinking of renovating your bathroom in the next few years, this blog is for you. As an interior designer and bathroom design specialist, I am always on the lookout for current, future and past trends in bathroom design. So I’m going to share with you the results of my research in this article. However, it is important to know that trends remain trends and that if you want to renovate your bathroom, it is always better to respect your taste rather than prioritize a style that will be less durable over time. The cost to renovate a bathroom is around $40,000, so it’s best to keep your design looking good for at least 20 years. In fact, interior design trends have a lifespan of about 7 years. I invite you to read my article on
bathroom trends 2022
as many of the trends described there continue this year.
1st bathroom trend of 2023: FLUTED OR DRUM VANITY UNITS.
The number one bathroom trend in 2023 is the fluted vanity! It’s a real change from the standard vanity furniture we’ve been seeing for years; wood effect or neutral color with straight doors! A little novelty in bathroom design is good! The fluting is the reverse pattern of the drum pattern, the hollows are inward, while the drum pattern is a half circle pattern side by side to create a beautiful relief. You can make furniture with this product without a problem, the easiest is to make it in MDF, but some manufacturers of polymer and wood cabinet doors offer their products in drum or fluted effect.
The fluted pattern is beautiful in both neutral colors like white and rich wood tones! It’s a subtle texture that adds sophistication to a bathroom setting.
2nd bathroom trend of 2023: VERTICAL PANELLING
Wainscoting, also known as shiplap, has been popular in bathroom and home designs for some years now. Especially with the popularization of the FarmHouse style, we see it on accent walls, fireplace mantels, mudrooms, laundry rooms, etc. However, in 2023, the trend for wainscoting will get smaller! We return to the small classic or country paneling, but not in pine anyway! The trendy width is about 2” and interior designers will prioritize vertical installation for an even more original look! For the types of joints between the slats, we prioritize a small, really subtle joint. Avoid a large groove that looks too antique. There are really no other rules to follow to have fun with the design and integrate the paneling into your decor! You can do half walls, full walls, all the walls in the bathroom and even the ceiling! There are really no limits. Plus, wainscoting is a timeless pattern so it’s something that will always look good in your bathroom.
You can easily change the color of this one by painting it to fit through the years! The most popular colors for wainscoting walls are white, black for a chic look and also all the classic colors like blue and green for a more colorful effect! I challenge you to incorporate wainscoting into your next bathroom renovation!!!
3rd bathroom trend of 2023: THE COLOR GREEN
Okay, I’m cheating a little bit because I already talked about the color green in my bathroom trends blog from last year. I wanted to talk to you about this again because it happens to be a really popular and beautiful color to incorporate into the bathroom. In addition, material companies have released several new products in this shade!
In the bathroom, green should be used strategically, because it is not a color that makes you look good! So avoid painting your vanity/mirror wall green, you’ll be depressed every morning looking at your pale complexion in the mirror. The best colors for a healthy look in the bathroom are peaches, pinks and reds.
Here’s how I suggest you incorporate green into your bathroom. My first suggestion is to choose a beautiful green vanity, it will add style and character to your bathroom without much effort. Another idea would be to incorporate green tiles for the shower, whether it’s an accent wall or all the walls in the shower, both would look great!
If you want to renovate your bathroom while keeping a timeless look, choose green instead in accessories that are easy to replace like bath towels and carpet, adding some plants in pretty green pots and wall decorations with a touch of soft green!
I’m just finishing my dream bathroom and I chose green as the theme in my bathroom design. Follow me on my Instagram page to be the first to see its unveiling.
4th bathroom trend of 2023 : THE DAMIER
The checkerboard has been on the back burner for many years as an interior designer, but it is now back in full force! In fact, it was Shea Mcgee of Studio Mcgee who popularized it. It’s wonderful to use the checkerboard floor for a bathroom, it gives a lot of character. You shouldn’t be afraid to use large tiles even in a small room, it makes the room look bigger, contrary to popular belief. The checkerboard looks great on the floor, but I wouldn’t advise putting it on the wall. When it comes to colors, the most popular layout for the bathroom is black and white. The checkerboard is also available in gray and white. For a more original and warm style, I suggest you try warm shades like brown and white, or beige and terracotta!
To make a checkerboard, you need to choose two colors of porcelain ideally in the same collection to have exactly the same size of tiles and pattern. You can choose marbled tiles that will give a classic look to your bathroom or plain tiles that will give a more retro look to your design. As an interior designer, I sometimes do custom tile, which means choosing a tile pattern, but having it cut to a certain size to make the pattern to the desired design in my project. It is also possible for you to do this to complete the design of your bathroom.
5th bathroom trend of 2023: SMOKED GLASS
A surprising, yet beautiful trend is back… smoked glass! It is used mostly in bathroom designs at the shower panel level! This is because bathrooms are getting bigger and bigger, and at some point having a completely open and transparent shower may bother some people. Installing a smoked glass will zone the space and create a much more pleasant atmosphere for the shower. It is also easier to maintain because in a transparent glass all the small drops of water appear easily. Interior designers also like to use textured glass, which is fluted or checkered glass. This gives a frosted effect to the glass panel, which increases privacy while maintaining a very stylish look!
Smoked or fluted glass looks great in modern bathroom designs where we come to mix shades of gray, concrete, slate and wood! Don’t forget to always add a touch of wood in your bathroom designs to get the warm effect. Smoked glass is a custom made product, you can see the details of this product with your interior designer or local glazier.
6th bathroom trend of 2023: THE SLAB SHOWER
In recent years, clients have always asked their bathroom designer for a completely ceramic shower. They wanted the shower floor to be level with the rest of the bathroom for a continuous effect. Manufacturers have invented linear shower drains to make a one-way shower slope. This allowed for shower bases with large tiles, rather than small mosaics. Today, this type of shower design is increasingly being replaced by dekton, quartz or porcelain shower bases! In addition to being a cost savings, this type of base is simpler to install and much easier to maintain than a shower grout!
They are beautiful and come in many colors. Their thickness is much thinner than standard acrylic shower bases, creating less thickness contrast between the bathroom and shower floor! As an interior designer, I highly recommend this type of shower base for your next bathroom design.
7th bathroom trend of 2023: UNIQUE BATHS
If you’re looking to make your bathroom unique with a little something extra that will take your guests’ breath away, I suggest you take a look at the original bath options. The most popular style of bath is definitely the freestanding bath without legs. The amount of bathing options is mind-boggling, and you can have fun with materials, colors and design forms.
If trends and the work of top American interior designers are any indication, we’re going to see a lot of green baths. Fluted profile baths are also very trendy. Finally, stone baths are exceptionally beautiful and will make a real statement in your bathroom.
In conclusion, interior designers won’t be bored this year as we have an array of trends, materials and colors to create beautiful and trendy bathrooms for 2023. We look forward to working with the rich green hues, fluted and wainscoted textures, checkerboards and original shower and bath bases. Challenge us to design your bathroom, we have no shortage of ideas.
