KITCHEN DESIGN TRENDS 2023

Source: Pinterest

Timeless trends… do they exist?

I heard this word for the first time a few months ago and I thought to myself… How can a trend be timeless? This is contradictory since normally a trend lasts one or two seasons.

But what the trainer was telling us is that the timeless look we’ve known for the past 20 years is about to change completely. The typical white kitchen, with a sober white and gray look, subway tiles on the backsplash and concrete effect tiles on the floor… We will see less and less of it. And yes, I know you are not ready to hear this! On the other hand, as an interior designer, it is my duty to be aware of the trends and to be able to advise my clients. A trend is a trend and in the end, it’s the client who decides what he likes and what he wants to have as a kitchen style so I respect that and our interior design team adapts to each client! This blog is here to inspire you!

So in fact, the new timelessness will slowly take shape over the next few years, with interiors making a big comeback to natural colors and trends. Chocolate brown and warm colors have already started to be more and more present in the last year. It’s really a big change in interior design that we are about to experience! In this article, I gather the kitchen trends for 2023. I did meticulous research as usual and kept an eye out for international exhibitions and fairs. I discovered some wonderful new products!

Also, I remind you that my article on

kitchen trends for 2022

is still relevant. Many of the trends I mentioned will continue in the coming years.

1st kitchen trend 2023: THE GRAIN PATTERN

Source: Pinterest

In recent years in interior design, the pattern that was popular was natural white and gray marble with delicate veining. This year, the trend is for bold veining, we return to very natural materials, raw and visually charged. Interior designers are using the grain pattern in kitchens at the countertop, island, backsplash or floor level. My advice as an interior designer if you want to embrace the veining trend: choose a pattern with colors you love and make this element the WOW touch in your kitchen design. For example, you could apply a granite on 3 sides of your island as well as on the kitchen backsplash. In this case, for the rest of the kitchen, choose plain, sober colors that complement the pattern. Ideally in the design of a kitchen with a pronounced grain pattern, no other grain materials are added.

As for the most popular grain pattern colors for 2023 kitchens, they are green derivatives, creams, black and touches of brown and orange-brown. It’s quite a process to find the right pattern and the right stone for your kitchen countertop, don’t hesitate to ask an interior designer for advice, she will be able to introduce you to the best Quebec and Canadian companies specialized in this field.

2nd kitchen trend of 2023: STONE BACKSPLASHES

You’ve certainly started to see in some of McGee Studio’s kitchen designs, beautiful raw stone or uneven brick kitchen backsplashes! I love it… I’m won over by this design that gives a lot of character to a kitchen! The question that always comes up, however, is whether it is easy to clean. Indeed, it can be scary to have a kitchen wall made of mortar with porous stones. It is important to know that there are sealers that will act as a varnish, but that will not change the visual appearance of the stone. This is an essential detail in order to be able to properly maintain your stone backsplash in a kitchen. Otherwise, my other idea as an interior designer: choose a smooth backsplash like a quartz behind the oven and apply the stone backsplash on the other walls, it can make a very nice look!

The raw stone trend in the kitchen is really ideal for you if you want to bring warmth and a rustic look to your decor.

3rd kitchen trend of 2023 : FLUTED CERAMIC

Source: Pinterest

Wooden drums have become increasingly important in interior design, both in kitchens and in particular designs in the home. This fluted pattern will be used in all materials and objects! We’re already seeing influencers using trendy fluted glasses on Instagram! Now it’s the turn of ceramics to take over the fluting! This pattern is very interesting because it is still subtle, but very stylish. It’s the kind of signature detail that interior designers love. As I often say, it’s easy to come up with a beautiful kitchen design, but when it’s designed and thought out by an interior designer… there are always little details that make all the difference and create the wow effect so sought after.

If you want to use a fluted ceramic pattern for your kitchen, I suggest using it judiciously and mixing it with plain tiles to keep it from being too visually intense.

4th kitchen trends 2023 : HERITAGE KITCHENS

Source: Pinterest

The style of cooking that will be most popular in 2023 is not farmhouse, not classic, not California, but heritage! This is definitely my new favorite style, although it’s really hard for an interior designer to pick one particular style! That’s why in our company we work on all the different styles of kitchens: modern, classic, mid century, etc. The heritage kitchen is defined as a mix of rustic, century-old and English country inspirations! It is a completely new kitchen, but with the charm of the past. The materials used to create this effect are wood or checkerboard floors and brick or stone backsplashes.

When it comes to choosing a kitchen cabinet door, we prefer real wood doors in all the variations of browns of the past. For the more nostalgic, we even go so far as to add popular classic patterns like tartan or toile de Jouy in the kitchen! This can be in the form of ceramics or simply by lining one or two walls of the kitchen with wallpaper.

5th kitchen trends 2023 : BIOPHILIC COOKING

Source: Pinterest

Nature will have a big influence on interior design in the coming years. In fact, society has a great desire to reconnect with nature and regain a sense of well-being. Biophilic interior design is the trend of taking inspiration from nature to create relaxing and vibrant interiors. In fact, the link between human beings and nature is so important that if we are deprived of it we get sick.

Here are some ideas for incorporating biophilic interior design into your kitchen. First, I recommend using the color green, whether for kitchen cabinet doors or as an accent with the backsplash choice. Green is totally on trend and will bring a warm look to your kitchen effortlessly.

Add plants to your decor is essential to integrate biophilic design in your kitchen. An original way to integrate plants is to adopt the green wall or to provide a shelf above the island to place plants. If the lot where your house is located is well wooded, it may be worthwhile to provide large windows or to position a long window as a backsplash.

6th kitchen trends 2023 : THE COLOR LAVENDER

Source: Pinterest

Do you remember that Pantone’s color of the year 2022 was a derivative of purple? Often, interior design trends take a little longer to be integrated into our interiors. That’s why we are starting to see the color lavender appear in decoration. It’s kind of surprising at first, but let me convince you that this color can bring a lot of joy and relaxation to your kitchen design. For the more daring, I recommend choosing lavender colored kitchen cabinetry. It’s so original and soft as a color, I can imagine this concept in a nice city apartment.

If you are more of a risk-taker, I suggest you integrate the lavender color in some of your kitchen accessories, such as stools, curtains or simply kitchen equipment (plates, crock pot, cups)

7th kitchen trends 2023 : VERTICAL PANELLING

Source: Pinterest

Wainscoting is a big trend in general in interior design right now, we see it in entryways, on accent walls and on farmhouse style fireplace mantels. The difference this year is that the paneling will reappear on the kitchen doors and especially vertically! Don’t worry, we’re not going back to the country kitchen trend with paneling everywhere! We are rather in a style of very modern and uncluttered kitchen. Adding some wainscoting accents gives the kitchen an interesting detail and makes it more original. In fact, it gives a little Japanese look!

Source: Pinterest

The idea of this trend is to apply the paneling to one or two areas in your kitchen at most. For example, you could choose to make the design of the kitchen hood out of wainscot and a section of the bottom cabinet doors. As for the width of the wainscot, interior designers advise you to choose a thin wainscot, between 1 to 3 inches.

8th kitchen trends 2023: WARM COLORS. ( BEIGE, BROWN, GREEN)

Source: Pinterest

Are you ready for the new gray? The beige continues and will take over our interiors. The prediction of color experts and designers is that in the next few years, gray will be less and less present and beige will be everywhere! The beige will come in several shades such as sand, taupe, brown, gold and pink.

When it comes to kitchen shades, brown will be more and more present, as mentioned above. We return to the chocolate brown and caramel wood nuances. Interior designers love to mix dark brown colors with gold hardware! I am sure you will be won over by this style.

The biggest kitchen trend of 2023 is definitely the green kitchen! This is a trend that had begun in 2022 and is continuing in full force. Material manufacturers and kitchen cabinet designers have released new shades of green that range from sage green to forest green. There are no more excuses for not cooking green! Plus, green mixes beautifully with all the trends and colors I’ve talked about in this article.

If you’re looking to remodel your kitchen in 2023, know that now is a great time since material availability is back to normal and the contractor schedule is not yet complete. In summary, the eight kitchen trends for 2023 are; veining patterns on countertops, stone backsplashes, fluted ceramic, heritage kitchen style, biophilic kitchen, lavender color, vertical wainscoting and warm natural colors!
